AUTISM Service dogs for Young Adults
The primary goal of an Autism Service Dog Program for adults is to make everyday environments less overwhelming and easier to manage and for those seeking to live a more independent life. An autism service dog provides a constant, non-judgmental presence and is trained to interrupt common anxiety symptoms automatically and provide deep pressure when cued. These gentle interventions can help an individual cope with overwhelming stimuli instead of shutting down. Because of these interventions, people can go places they have been afraid or reluctant to go, and their isolation is decreased. Recipients of these dogs are taught how to communicate with their dogs via praise and reward, as well as how to read the dog’s body language. These skills can translate to communicating with family members and friends more effectively.
Autism Service Dogs are trained to help:
Improve conversational skills by becoming a focal point for socialization and conversation
Teach body language, social cues, and empathy by using the dog as a model
Regulate emotions with tactile contact or deep pressure
Ease transitions by using the service dog as the focal point and reducing stress
