Service Dogs of Virginia Board of Directors 2006

R. Marc Johnson, President

Marc currently works as the Director of Youth Programs and Assistant to the Executive Director at the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership.  In this role he oversees civic education and leadership courses that focus on Virginia government and politics for college and high school students.  In recent years, Marc has been a featured speaker on student leadership and public policy internships for college students.  In 2005, Governor Mark Warner appointed him to the Virginia Commission on National and Community Service.  He is a graduate of the Sorensen Institute’s College Leaders Program and a member of the 2005-06 class of Leadership Charlottesville.  Marc graduated from the College of William & Mary with a degree with honors in Government.

Carol Hoselton, Secretary

Carol has held key executive positions in the airline and travel industries for the past 20 years.  Currently she is Vice President of Customer Support for WorldStrides headquartered in Charlottesville.  Carol graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in Accounting and holds an MBA degree in Information Systems from the University of Dallas.  She has strong combination of customer service, sales, marketing and information systems expertise.  Carol has played a key role in the development of business plans, budget, sales plans and key initiatives for achieving strategic goals and objectives.  Carol is active in civic and cultural organizations in the Charlottesville area.  

Kristin Lindgren, Treasurer

Kristin Lindgren, CPA/ABV is a Manager at Hantzmon Wiebel LLP specializing in business valuations and related consulting services. Kristin has over 10 years of experience in the accounting profession, and has been in public accounting since 1997. Kristin has also spent several years in private accounting, working within the real estate division of Paine Webber, Inc. in Boston, Massachusetts. Kristin has taken numerous courses in the business valuation field and has taught continuing professional education courses in the valuation of closely held businesses to other CPAs. She is a graduate of the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce and the Leadership Charlottesville program.

Ciara Campbell

Ciara Campbell is the youngest member of the Service Dog Board. Currently enrolled at PVCC, she has attended Landmark College in Putney, Vermont and Catholic University in Washington, D.C. At Catholic University Ciara worked with the Emerging Leaders Program and Alpha Phi Omega, a co-ed service fraternity, as well as working as a summer counselor for disadvantaged youth. Ciara worked as a student advocate for accessibility resulting in Catholic University’s campus coming into compliance with the Americans for Disabilities Act. She has also worked with the American Association for People with Disabilities, participated in the National Council on Disability’s Youth Leadership Conference as a moderator, planner, and peer mentor. Through the Kluge Children’s Rehabilitation Center, she has participated in the North American Growth in Cerebral Palsy Project and she has participated in teaching at the University of Virginia School of Education.

Aven Hormel

Aven Hormel is the Accounting Manager for the American Institute for Diseases of the Prostate and Buck Mountain Enterprises in Earlysville, Virginia.  She has a wide range of professional accounting and financial experience, with experience in the retail industry, real estate and medical fields.  She is a board member and President of the Hut Foundation, overseeing the charitable activities of that Foundation board to ensure it is meeting its goals.  She has also volunteered at a domestic violence shelter and done other volunteer work within the community.  Aven is a graduate of the University of Mary Washington.

Heather Hormel-Miller

Heather Hormel-Miller is an attorney at FEIL PETTIT & WILLIAMS, PLC (Associate) born Charlottesville, Virginia, April 13, 1974; admitted to bar, 2002, Virginia and U.S. District Court, Western District of Virginia; 2004, District of Columbia. Education: University of Virginia (B.A., 1996); University of Chicago (J.D., 2002). Staff Member, 2000-2001 and Articles and Production Editor, 2001-2002, University of Chicago Legal Forum. Law Clerk to Judge Moon, U.S. District Court, Western District of Virginia, 2002-2003. Member: Charlottesville-Albemarle, Virginia and American Bar Associations; Virginia State Bar; The District of Columbia Bar. Practice Areas: Government Contracts; Civil Litigation; Business Law; Real Estate.

Halliday Merrick

Halliday is an attorney at DurretteBradshaw, PLC, in Richmond. Until February of 2006, she clerked for the Honorable Dennis W. Dohnal, United States Magistrate Judge, and U.S. District Court in Richmond, Virginia. Originally from Maine, Halliday spent three years as a veterinary technician prior to entering law school. 

Halliday received her law degree from the University of Richmond T.C. Williams School of Law graduating cum laude. At Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, magna cum laude and was selected as a Wheaton Fellow.

She is a member of the Virginia Bar Association, American Bar Association, the Metro Richmond Women's Bar Association, Central Virginia Legal Aid Society Pro-Bono Program.  In addition, she is an active volunteer with the Richmond City shelter, providing a foster home and rehabilitation care and for stray dogs.

Megan Orndorff

Megan Orndorff is a 2003 graduate of Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virginia where she majored in Communication Studies and minored in Psychology. She is now Permanent Class President and serves on the Alumni Association. Megan graduated Boston University with a Masters Degree in Public Relations with a Concentration in the Nonprofit Sector.  Through the Masters program, she studied abroad in London for a semester to gain valuable international public relations experience. Part of this experience included an internship with Special Olympics Great Britain. Megan moved to Charlottesville in February of 2005 to pursue a unique position in the sales and marketing department of WCAV CBS19, WVAW ABC16 and WAHU FOX27. She coordinates the community outreach and all relationships with local nonprofit organizations for the three stations.  It is her responsibility to put the station motto, "Where Community Counts" into action. In her spare time, Megan serves on the Publicity Committee of Party Parade 2006, participates in Leadership Charlottesville 2006, serves as a board member and marketing committee chairperson for Service Dogs of Virginia, and attends church and a bible study regularly.”

Peggy Law, Executive Director & Director of Training

peggy and CousteauPeggy Law is the founder of Service Dogs of Virginia. Peggy studied service dog work in 1999 at the Assistance Dog Institute in Rohnert Park, California with Bonnie Bergin, originator of the service dog concept and founder of the first service dog organization in the United States. In pursuit of more specialized skills in animal training, Peggy enrolled in the Operant Conditioning Workshops in Hot Springs, Arkansas run by Robert and Marion Bailey, and considered among the most intense and thorough animal training workshops in the country. Peggy maintains an ongoing mentoring relationship with Susquehanna Service Dogs (SSD) in Harrisburg, PA. SSD is extremely valuable for the insight of 13 years of experience working with disabled clients and dogs. Peggy was a starting partner in a successful Virginia vineyard and winery and is the proud mother of  an Albemarle High School student. She brings a deep commitment to human and animal welfare to this project. She is a 1975 graduate of William Smith College.
